Private Sector and the Art of Mystery ShoppingThe main goal of any private sector business is to enhance profitability by increasing efficiency and service. Be it an automobile industry, a service industry or a retail ownership they are constantly in search of new ways and means to increase their profit margins. That is after all why they have selected this domain in the first place. Later on, they receive the additional benefits of having their own establishment - fame, popularity and eventually customer loyalty. Once they own these things they have managed to achieve every step of a successful entrepreneurship. How a company in this domain performs ultimately forms the basis for future trends. A private sector company may undertake many ways to find out if their service and performance is being appreciated by the general public. If they find something is lacking then they indulge in methods to explore what those are. Secret shopping expeditions are conducted to assess the overall functioning of any unit, especially if it is constantly in contact with customers. Only with increased customer satisfaction can a company ever think of gaining success. What Exactly Is This? Mystery shoppers are the ones who function as the main protagonists in this mini-drama. They go on a mission involving shopping to the service outlet which needs to be assessed. They carry with them questionnaires, a list of other specific orders and even audio and video appliances to record their experiences. This is recorded and then documented so that the private sector, which had requested this mission in the first place, may have a genuine idea of what goes on in that part of their organization. There are market research companies who employ these shoppers who are then hired by organizations to do their detective work. The information they gather is carefully collated and documented for the benefit of the company. What Do They Gain? Many companies undertake this exercise to get a clear idea of how their outlets function. They try to evaluate the level of customer care, the availability of the desired products, the environment in the outlet or how clean is the facility, behavior of employees towards different types of consumers and how they react to customer complaints. The main goal of private sector organizations is to achieve customer satisfaction so that they in turn profit from it. They need to investigate certain aspects of their business to achieve that. Who Does It? A mystery shopper can be anyone with the appropriate training and sometimes a private investigator license (as recommended in some states). They can be hired through the internet and given specific assignments on completion of which they receive their payment. They might also be reimbursed for their expenses. They can provide constructive information if they are properly trained and can be perceived as value for money. The private sector which thrives on the satisfaction of their end users can gain a lot using the services of these experts. They can help the private domain enhance their service and find the obstacles in the way of performance measurement to provide customer focused services. The results can be simple and surprising.
